First Blog Post

Welcome to my first blog post on my new blog site. My name is Stuart Wortman and I am currently a senior at Indiana University-South Bend. My first post is for my readers to be able to learn about me and how I came to where I am today.

My major is Informatics with a cognate in Business. I am currently a stay at home dad while I finish up my undergraduate degree. I am 30 years old, which I would assume would give me a couple years on most of my peers at school. I chose this topic because I can give some insight and advice for others that are or are thinking of returning to school.

I was working full time while taking classes part time before 2017. In the fall of 2016, the company I worked for decided to sell the medical side of their distribution company that involved me. I decided to take the severance pay due to the fact we were having our first child a month later. It's funny how life works sometimes. It worked out great for me to be able to stay at home with my son while going to school full-time.

Before ending up at Indiana University-South Bend I spent my first few years out of high school at Western Michigan University. From there I went on to work full time for a few years before returning to school at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a couple of semesters. From there I went to work full time until I restarted my education at Indiana University South-Bend.

I hope you return for my future posts about being a non traditional college student.

  1. Hi Stuart! I believe your blog will be extremely helpful for those thinking about going back to school. I imagine it could be intimidating going back to college after years of not taking classes. I am excited to see what you will be writing. Has it been difficult going to school full time and taking care of your son? I have a lot of respect for those who go to school and raise children at the same time.

  2. Really nice story that a lot of people thinking about going back to school can relate to. I think your page layout is very nice.

  3. I am so excited to read your blog! My husband recently went back to school after 8 years and he has been adjusting to school life again after working two full time jobs for the past eight years. I hope to be able to share some of your posts with him to show him that it is not just him that is a "non-traditional" college student and it is okay to go back at any age! Keep it up and know I am rooting for you too!
